#thankyoumum

The word motherhood conjures up lots of images and emotions. It is a generic but emotive word that describes a very personal and unique relationship.

This Mother's Day we managed to grab 5 minutes with some of our amazing (and very busy!) mums and customers to find out what being a parent means to them and the piece of jewellery which captures their memories and milestones.

Gem is a mum of 4, NHS paediatric nurse and author of Love to Sleep.

Describe being a mum to you in three words (we know it's a challenge!)

Affirming. Exhausting. Everlasting

What does your necklace mean to you? (Trigger warning “ mentions baby loss).

My husband brought me my moon necklace for my birthday, shortly before we found out we were pregnant. I was carrying twins and had a miscarriage of one of our twins on the eve of New Year's Eve. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through.

My daughter's pregnancy was incredibly difficult, and I had several bleeds throughout. This all happened during the pandemic, so I had to go to every scan and appointment on my own. My necklace was my little security blanket, at every appointment I would sit in the hospital waiting room holding onto my necklace and praying that the baby is going to be okay.

As soon as Posie was born my husband changed my gold-plated necklace for a solid gold one and had the word forever engraved on it. It's my most precious piece of jewellery and I will cherish it forever

@moniquesterling

Monique is a model and all-round lovely human. She lives in London and is mum to her gorgeous boy, Indigo.

Describe being a mum to you in three words.

An unrelenting rollercoaster

What are the highs and lows of being a mum?

The lows are whenever Indigo is ill and you can't just immediately magic the pain away.

The highs are being grabbed by my hair so that he can plant a big fat sloppy kiss on me. I'm treasuring those especially as I know it won't be too long until that's not cool!

Why is your locket important to you?

I've always wanted a locket since I was at school, granted I wanted to put my crush from the year above in it but to have my own baby in there now is even better.

What would be your ideal Mother's Day?

My ideal Mother's Day would involve a morning in a spa and then a lamb roast out with the family, cuddles and a movie and then the three of us in bed for 8pm. I have learnt you can never be in bed too early!

@N4MUMMY

Karen is London based mum of 3 with a sustainable fashion and lifestyle blog.

Describe being a mum in 3 words

Utterly wonderful. Totally fulfilling. Completely exhausting.

For me, being a mother is a complete roller coaster of emotions. Until I had my children, I never knew I could love so fiercely, sacrifice myself so willingly, feel so absolutely powerless to the will of a 2-year-old child, feel so enraged by someone so small or be so utterly exhausted but happy all at the same time.

Why do you love your necklace?

I love having a piece of personalised jewellery that has my children's names and birth stones on it, it is unique and the fact that's made from 9ct gold means I never need to take it off, it's truly a forever piece of jewellery and something I will treasure all my life.

How would you like to spend Mother's Day this year?

My ideal Mother's Day would start with a lie in, include a walk of some sorts come rain or shine and crucially not having to cook or wash up all day.

dr Jenna 1

@dr_jenna_macciochi

Jenna is an immunologist and author of Your Blueprint for Strong Immunity. She is also mum to twins.

How would you describe being a mum?

I'd say unconditionally loving, immensely rewarding, sometimes challenging.

What does your necklace mean to you?

Day-to-day I can't wear a lot of jewellery because of my job but I do wear a necklace pretty much all the time so it's nice to have one that's extra special with my children's' names close to my heart.

Describe your ideal Mother's Day?

Ooh good question! I am quite a morning person so not fussed by a lie-in but would love the option to wake up and do a yoga or Pilates class followed by a family brunch in one of the wonderful cafes we have in Brighton and Hove. Then maybe an afternoon spent hiking and foraging on the Downs with my family before a country pub roast dinner then cosying up with my kids at home for a family film.
